Carpet Cleaning Drying Time Variables

A question I am very often asked by Clients or on the Carpet Cleaning Somerset blog, is how long will it take for the carpets to dry after cleaning. In my head I then perform a complicated calculation taking all the variables in to account, followed by an approximation as to the time it will take to dry. Dissecting this calculation which has come from my years as a carpet cleaner fall into three main categories.

The Environment

Environmantal factors include those we have no control over such as the weather. With higher humidity drying times tend to be slower. A hot day may be inferior drying weather due to other factors like humidity. If you think about your washing a fresh breeze is far better for drying than a still, humid day. We can control the indoor environment and opening windows to allow aiflow is far better than say simply turning the heating on full. So setting up a convecting current to an upstairs window would do the trick.

The Carpet

Synthetic fibres will dry more quickly than wool. The carpet construction can be a factor, long pile and dense pile will requier longer than short, open pile. Berber and loop carpets tend to dry slower. Due to reduced absorbency, wool carpets previously treated with protector will dry slightly faster.

The Equipment and Operator Skill

Quite often this is the biggest factor in drying and can be seen where inadequate cleaning has lead to wet, smelly carpets. Deep steam cleaning requires a powerful extraction system otherwise the carpet will be too wet. This needs powerful equipment that requires a high financial investment. Domestic market and hired machines are very low power in comparison to professional, van mounted systems. Most professional carpet cleaner carry air moving equipment to aid drying if required. Sometimes and especially on low pro commercial carpet, the professional cleaner may use a rotary bonnet system either for carpet cleaning or for additional drying. A top UK specialist in LM cleaning (low moisture) is carpet cleaning stockport.

Inexperienced Operators, even with high power Truckmount based systems can leave far more moisture in the carpet if they have poor cleaning methods.

6-12 hours is a typcal time for a wool pile carpet to dry assuming most factors responsible for drying are in your favour. Probably the quickest drying will be synthetic low profile commercial carpets. Malodours and possibly health implications are possible if a carpet is wet for longer than 24hrs due to bacteria and mold growth.
